| 1927 | Himas (Flo) Anckle, A composer, musician and a lifelong resident of New Orleans, Louisiana. He was a member of the Musicians Union. He played with Bill Sinegal's Band, and was a leader Of Majestic Brass Band. He played with several Jazz Bands including the Eureka Jazz Band and Young Tuxedo Jazz Band. He Co-Authored 'Second Line, Part I And Part II.' Flo passed away on May 16, 1994. (98) |
| 1937 | Joseph Jarman, Great tenor saxophonist was a founding member of the Art Ensemble of Chicago in the days when they burst into the jazz/improvised music scene. Though a breathtaking innovator, Jarman can still be tenderly lyrical and remain true to his swing background. Unfortunately, Jarman seldom appears in Chicago anymore, as he now lives in Brooklyn. He no longer performs in the Art Ensemble, and pursues his interest in the Buddhist religion more often than playing sax. (88) |

| 1954 | Barry Cowsill, Musician and member of the musical group The Cowsills. He was born in Newport, Rhode Island. The fifth of seven children, Barry soon became the drummer (and later the bass player) of his brothers' band, playing popular tunes at local dance clubs. In the late 1960's, this band expanded to include two more brothers, a sister, and their mother, and The Cowsills went on to churn out a string of hits (including the #2's "The Rain the Park and Other Things" and "Hair") before officially disbanding in 1971. He died as a result of hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. (71) |

| 1998 | Johnny Adams (Laten John Adams), a blues, jazz and gospel singer and native of New Orleans, Louisiana passed away on this day. He was known as "The Tan Canary" because of his mult-octave range. He began singing gospel music, but crossed over in 1959, when his neighbor Dorothy LaBostrie persuaded him to record "I Won't Cry" for Joe Ruffino's local Ric label. During the 1960's he recorded for small labels and charted 4 times. He continued to tour until 1983, when he signed with Rounder Records and released 9 albums produced by Scott Billington. He died in Baton Rouge, Louisiana after a long battle with prostate cancer. |
